Inside every tooth is a small space that holds nerve and blood vessels. When decay, a crack, or an old failing filling lets bacteria reach that space, the tissue inside gets infected and it does not heal on its own. A root canal removes the infected tissue, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them so bacteria cannot get back in. The outside of the tooth stays. The difference between a root canal that lasts and one that fails is usually the detail work. Here is what we do on every case.
- Brand new files, every single time. The instruments that shape your canals are used once and thrown away. They are never reused on another patient, and never on another tooth.
- A rubber dam on every case, no exceptions. It isolates the tooth so saliva and bacteria stay out of the canals while we work, and so nothing goes anywhere it should not.
- 3D imaging when the roots are complicated. A regular X-ray flattens a tooth into two dimensions. Our cone beam scanner shows the roots in three, so extra canals and unusual curves get found before we start rather than halfway through.
- Sonic activation of the disinfectant. Cleaning solution alone does not reach the small side branches. Activating it does.
- A warm sealing technique that flows into the irregular shape of a real canal instead of leaving gaps.
- We build the tooth back the same day. Rather than leaving you with a soft temporary that can wash out, we rebuild the tooth with a proper core so it is sealed and solid when you walk out.

What the Appointment Looks Like
Most root canals are one visit. We get you numb, place the rubber dam, open the tooth, clean and shape each canal to its measured length, seal them, and rebuild the tooth. Molars take longer than front teeth because there is more to treat. Badly infected teeth are sometimes better done in two visits with medication in between, and we will tell you honestly if yours is one of those.
Afterward the tooth is usually tender to bite on for a few days while the ligament around it calms down. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories handle it for most people.

Does a root canal hurt?
The treatment itself should not. The tooth is fully numb, and for most people the ache they arrived with is gone by the time they leave. Soreness for a few days afterward is normal and usually manageable with over-the-counter medication.
Do I really need a crown afterward?
On back teeth, yes in almost every case. Chewing loads on molars are high, and a treated tooth without a crown is likely to split. A split root usually cannot be saved, so the crown protects the money and time you just invested.
Can you do molars, or will I be referred out?
We do molars here. That is the reason we invested in the equipment and the training. Some cases genuinely belong with a specialist, and if yours is one of them we will say so rather than start something we should not.
Is it better to just pull the tooth?
Very rarely. Nothing works as well as your own tooth, and extraction starts a longer and more expensive path of replacing it. Pulling the tooth makes sense when it is cracked below the bone or too broken down to restore.
What if I had a root canal somewhere else and it still hurts?
That happens, usually because a canal was missed or the seal has leaked. It can often be retreated. Bring your films if you have them, or we will take our own.
How long does a root canal last?
A well done root canal on a tooth that gets a proper crown can last for decades. The two things that shorten it are skipping the crown and letting new decay start underneath it.
